Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology

●Director

  • ・Prof. Morinobu Akio

Established in October 2000, we were the first clinical department for rheumatic disease (connective tissue disease) of all the university hospitals in the Kansai district.

Department of Early Clinical Development

●Director

  • ・Prof. Nakajima Takako
We aim to provide the advanced and original platform for development of new drugs and devices in various diseases by applying outstanding scientific discoveries, including findings from iPS cell research. We, particularly, focus on early-phase clinical trials for cancer and intractable diseases, regenerative medicine with iPS cells, and phase I trials for healthy volunteers.
We are experts on early clinical development, and conduct trials safely and efficiently with medical staffs at Ki-CONNECT, who are trained for early clinical trials, and various departments of Kyoto University Hospital including Emergency unit. All our trials are for the patient to cure malignant diseases.
In addition, we provide leaning opportunities for young doctors involved in early-phase clinical trials. We believe that our colleagues will internationally lead clinical developments in the near future.

Gastrointestinal Surgery

●Director

  • ・Prof. Obama Kazutaka

We conduct surgical treatment, education and research for such diseases as alimentary canal cancer (esophageal, stomach, bowel cancer), inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease) and benign diseases of the esophagus (achalasia, reflux esophagitis). With the active use of endoscopic treatment (abdominoscope and thoracoscope), it makes it possible to offer less-invasive as well as accurate surgeries compared to the traditional thoracolaparotomy. We also try to provide each patient with the most suitable and satisfactory care by combining multimodality therapy which has few side effects, based on clinical studies.

Photo

Breast Surgery

●Director

  • ・Associate Prof. Takada Masahiro

The specialist Breast Surgery clinic was formed in the department of surgery in February 2007. We conduct medical treatment, education and research focusing on breast cancer. As multimodality therapy has progressed, the salvage rate of the breast and axilla has been enhanced and prognosis has significantly improved. On the other hand, individualization or determining medical care depending on each feature of tumors or clinical conditions has also progressed. This has made it possible to offer strong anti-tumor effects by specifically targeted treatments as well as the avoidance of over-treatment. In our department, we set up a system for cooperation with other clinical departments in order to respond to different conditions while practicing multimodalization, individualization and advanced and less-invasive treatments. Based on such principles, we are working on the development of local and systemic therapy advancements, as well as the establishment of new medical algorithms.

Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery and Transplantation

●Director

  • ・Prof. Hatano Etsuro

Our department consists of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and transplantation. In the field of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, surgical care of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas cancers is the main practice. Our pioneering diagnosis and treatment of the pancreaticoduodenal endocrine tumor has been internationally recognized. We also provide treatment for cholelithiasis. In the field of transplantation, we are noted for liver transplantation and deal with about 80 cases annually. Our medical institution is an international hub for liver transplantation. Additionally, we are also leading in the field of islet transplantation in Japan as a treatment for intractable diabetes.

We work with the departments of thoracic surgery and urology regarding the last two fields. There is also a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our NICU cares for sick newborns in cooperation with the departments of pediatrics and obstetrics to provide safe medical care. We also treat cancer in children (like neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, nephroblastoma, malignant teratoma, rhabdomyosarcoma) and refractory diseases in severely handicapped children, working with the department of pediatrics. Respiratory Care and Sleep Control Medicine

We are a multidisciplinary team, cooperating with specialists from the Japanese Society of Sleep Research, the Japanese Respiratory Society, and the Japanese Society of Neurology and Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT). Polysomnography is the most reliable and commonly used diagnostic tool for sleep disorders.

Whilst there are more than one hundred types of sleep disorders the bulk of our clinical practice involves the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). Statistics tell us that 1 in 5 adults stop or have infrequent breathing more than five times an hour during their sleep. For one person in fifteen this happens more than fifteen times an hour and necessitates medical intervention. Sleep apnea has a deleterious affects on other conditions such as cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes. Sufferers are often tired during the day and this adversely affects their life. Our outpatient service is open everyday. Please feel free to visit us if you are snoring, have high-blood pressure, diabetes or obesity and are concerned you might have SAS. (written by Kazuo Chin, outpatient clinician at Respiratory Care / Sleep Apnea )

CPAP therapy using nasal masks is the most common therapy for OSAS patients. The above shows how your throat is during sleep.

  • a. A healthy throat (upper airway) remains open during sleep.
  • b. A OSAS patient's throat closes during sleep.
  • c. The pressure of the nasal mask keeps a OSAS patient's throat open.

CPAP is a very simple and easy devise.
